Funahashi Times No.58 私の大切な「四つ葉のクローバー」

Hello there!

My students gave me a four-leaf clover. It’s very difficult to find one. Many people say that there’s only 1 four-leaf clover in every 10000 clovers. Others say that there’s 1 in every 5000 clovers. A four-leaf is a sign of good luck for many people around the world. They say that each leaf has a meaning — faith, hope, love, and success. In Europe, a very long time ago, they believed that it makes you see ghosts. I don’t really believe those, but I still treasure my four-leaf clover. It’s important to me because it’s from my students.

Funahashi Times No.57 おすすめの本 エレノア・コア作「美恵子の五つめの宝」

Hello there!

I want to introduce a book today. Its title is “Mieko and the Fifth Treasure” by Eleanor Coerr. It’s a book about Mieko. She’s a little girl from Hiroshima. She loves her family and calligraphy very much. After the war, she moved away from her home. Her hand also got hurt. She suddenly couldn’t write. She thought that she lost everything. The book tells us how Mieko lived a new life. It tells how Mieko found new friends. It tells how Mieko learned to do calligraphy again. It is a story about hope and starting a new life.

Funahashi Times No.56 「世界中で6月第3日曜は“父の日”」

Hello there!

Father’s Day is celebrated around the world every third Sunday of June. This year, it was celebrated last Sunday, June 20th. Every family has their own way of celebrating. Many people give chocolates and other gifts to their own father. Others post pictures and write beautiful messages and stories on social media. Others cook or go to restaurants to eat delicious food. My family doesn’t usually celebrate Father’s Day together. We usually just send short greetings to our father. Short and simple messages make my father happy. How about you? How do you celebrate Father’s Day?

Funahashi Times No.55 「そら豆を食べました!」

Hello there!

The school gave me “fava beans” last Friday. It is called “soramame” in Japanese. Fava beans look just like soybeans, but they are much bigger. They are like giant soybeans. It was my first time to see one. I have never tasted fava beans before, so I was excited to cook and eat them. It was really easy to cook them. I just boiled them for three minutes. I couldn’t really tell the taste clearly, but I enjoyed eating them. They are good for snacks. I think I’ll buy fava beans if I see some in the supermarket.
